Joan Jett Won't Perform On SD Float

Bookmark and Share

Joan Jett will no longer be performing on South Dakota's float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Parade officials are moving the rocker to a different float.

The decision to replace Jett, is ironically enough, because of her reputation. Good or Bad, she's a supporter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, something that doesn't necessarily mesh well with the ideals of some South Dakotans.

Brad Klostergaard, one of the owners of Sioux Falls Regional Livestock in Worthing, said, "It's kind of goofy because you know a long time ago I probably listened to some of Joan Jett."

The Runaway's Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are Rock legends, topping the Billboard's throughout the 80's. But recently, it's not the songs, but what Jett represents that's creating the 'Cherry Bomb' in South Dakota.

Klostergaard said, "Being from South Dakota and being in the livestock industry, maybe not the best choice we could have found."

Klostergaard says he's loves a little Rock and Roll, but like many others in the state, he makes his living off of livestock. He says having someone who promotes a vegetarian diet and criticizes livestock production practices perform on South Dakota's float in the parade is playing with fire.

Klostergaard said, "Agriculture is a huge part of our state. You know, what percentage of agriculture floats back into the economy. I mean, it's huge."

Whether people connect the dots or not, it doesn't bother him a bit that the parade decided to not have her be a part of the float.

"Why not a country music singer or something like that, or some guy like that, that's got a ranch and involved in the livestock industry," said Klostergaard.

The decision may have Jett singing 'You Don't Know What You've Got Til It's Gone', but it won't be coming from the Mount Rushmore State.

In a statement released Friday, Jett said 'political agendas are getting in the way of a fun event'. Jett said 'she'll focus on entertaining the millions of people who will watch what she calls a great American tradition'.

The state paid $175,000 to have a float in the parade. Five-thousand of that pays expenses for the artist. We have yet to hear who will replace Jett on South Dakota's float. Don Mclean, singer of 'American Pie' appeared on the float last year. Neil Diamond performed on it in 2011.
