A Flandreau man died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 about 12 miles south of Brookings on Sunday.
81-year-old Leslie James Schrecengost was driving a 2000 Ford Taurus southbound in the driving lane. 48-year-old William Carl Dixon of Estill Springs, Tennessee was driving a 2011 Ford F-250 pickup southbound, also in the driving lane.
Preliminary investigation indicates Schrecengost’s vehicle may have been moving slowly. Dixon’s vehicle struck the rear of the Taurus and rolled, coming to rest in the driving lane. Schrecengost’s vehicle was forced into the west ditch and came to rest at the bottom of the off-ramp.
Schrecengost, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died of injuries from the crash.
Dixon and a passenger, 42-year-old Eric Carlton Jones of Tullahoma, Tennessee, were wearing seatbelts and received minor injuries.
No further information is immediately available.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. The Moody Sheriff’s Office, Moody County Ambulance and Flandreau Fire Department assisted.
