When Getting Rid Of Your Pet Is A Last Resort

Two puppies were found tied up in a plastic bag and left to die in a trash can in Yankton. An animal Control Officer says a man was searching for a box in the trash behind a store, when he found them late Friday.

The nine-week-old Yorkie-Maltese puppies are okay, but this is the second time in a week that puppies have been found abandoned in South Dakota.

It’s been a little more than a week since six puppies were left for dead in Sioux Falls. On the night of Jan. 10, a woman saw a man putting a bag in her trash can. Luckily, she looked inside. The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society says it’s something nobody should have to see.

Sioux Falls Area Humane Society Volunteer Coordinator Alma Sehovic “There are different ways to go about unwanted animals instead of letting them suffering.”

When we last checked, the four males and two females were alive, but struggling to survive. Unfortunately, the humane society didn’t know a lot about them, which is important when trying to find any animal a good home.

Sehovic said, “We want to talk to you in person about the animals personality, any background. You have to think of it this way, the more background information we have the better chance that animal has in getting adopted.”

If you can’t bring them in person, the humane society offers nighttime receiving kennels as a last resort. The room of kennels is open 24 hours. They ask that you leave food and water and write down as much information about the animal as possible.

“It’s better than the highway or a gravel road, it’s a better alternative than freezing to death,” said Sehovic.

The staff at the humane society checks the kennels every morning. They’ve seen everything from gerbils to Great Danes waiting for them when they arrive.

Sehovic said, “There’s almost no day that goes by without an animal being dropped off here.”

Before their renovation, the humane society only had four receiving kennels. Because so many animals were being dropped off at night, they made room for 16.
