Five different players scored goals and Stefanos Lekkas earned his second shutout of the season with 27 saves as the Stampede rolled past the Fargo Force 5-0 Friday night at Scheels Arena. Sioux Falls scored twice in the first and three times in the second to cruise to their fourth straight victory.
The victory kept Sioux Falls (22-15-5) in fourth place in the West, just four points behind third place Omaha and three points ahead of fifth place Des Moines. The Stampede are now 5-1-0 against the Force this season and 8-9-2 away from home.
The Force controlled play early in the first period, but Stefanos Lekkas was strong in between the pipes and kept Fargo off the board. Sioux Falls changed the momentum of the game at the 16:30 mark when Parker Tuomie found Troy Loggins open in the slot and Loggins blasted a shot into the back of the net to give the Herd a 1-0 lead.
Just minutes later Sioux Falls took a 2-0 lead when Dillon Eichstadt set up Kieffer Bellows for his 25th goal of the season. Eichstadt took the puck from Dakota Joshua and patiently held the puck at the left point before sending a laser pass to Bellows who one-timed it from the right circle and past Fargo goaltender Mathias Israelsson. The Herd led 2-0, despite being outshot 11-7 in the period.
There was not let down in the second as the Herd picked up where they left off and scored just 4:04 into the period to take a 3-0 lead. On one of the nicest goals you’ll see this year, Alec Marsh took the puck down the right wing boards and fed Tuomie at center who sent the past back to Marsh who then returned the favor again to Tuomie in front of the net and Tuomie tapped the puck into the net for his 10th goal of the season.
Sioux Falls added to their lead just three minutes later when Eichstadt scored a goal of his own. Eichstadt took a pass just over the Fargo blue line from J.M. Piotrowski and then cut into the slot before wristing a shot perfectly into the upper left hand corner of the net to give Sioux Falls a 4-0 cushion.
Dakota Joshua finished the scoring at 12:38 when Trey Bradley sent a pass in the slot to Joshua who wristed the puck through the five hole of Israelsson to give Sioux Falls a 5-0 lead after just two periods. Sioux Falls outshot the Force 15-9 in the period.
Sioux Falls held strong in the third as Lekkas stopped seven shots faced in the period and Fargo never really posed a threat to the Herd who cruised to the victory. The Herd outshot Fargo 14-7 in the game and 36-27 on the night while going 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
