Whitewater Park Org. Brings Rapids To The Sioux Empire

The Sioux Falls Whitewater Park organization has already gotten their toes wet, but they need help raising money to keep the momentum going for the club so they can create a park, begin teaching classes, hold training sessions, and make a place where people can just have fun.
Organization president Mitchell Joldersma says it began as a dream a few years ago and has spiraled into reality. He is an avid whitewater kayaker and frequently takes trips to ride the rapids, but wanted a place closer to home to practice—the closest whitewater park to Sioux Falls is five hours away! Joldersma began gathering interest, and now a feasibility study is being conducted at the end of July along the Big Sioux River in Sioux Falls at multiple locations. The whitewater park would have anywhere from one to six drops that would be installed in the river. Limestone slabs would be installed for the drops and on the sides of the river for spectators or for people who just want to dip their feet in the water on a hot day. Joldersma says the Whitewater Park wouldn’t just be for kayaking, but for fishing, tubing, even rescue training.
Joldersma says the organization is also hoping to raise money for equipment to start kids kayaking classes. The gofundme page can be found here.
