Brookings is not only home to the state’s largest university; it’s now home to the safest.

Safety organization SafeWise has released its list of the top 50 safest college towns in America, and number one on that list: the city of Brookings.

SafeWise ranked U.S. college towns by comparing FBI crime statistics with the city’s population. Community and law enforcement relations is cited as the main reason Brookings came out on top.

“It’s not the first time we’ve been named a safe city, and I think a lot of it has to do with the partnerships we have in the community” said Brookings Police Chief Jeff Miller.

Brookings is home to nearly 23,000 people, and SDSU adds another 12,500. So keeping the city safe is the job of both the Brookings Police Department, and the SDSU Police Department.

“We think it’s a pretty safe place, and now we have some validation that that’s true,” said Don Challis, Assistant VP for Safety and Security at SDSU.

Challis says he’s proud of the relationships that SDSU police officers have made with students.

“We do a lot of work on communication so we can communicate with them, and back to us. We want to be something more than just those people that show up when something is going on.”

School officials continue to make improvements to campus security to ensure the safety of students. Next week a new app called “Guardian Jackrabbit” will be released to students that allows them to communicate with campus police on their mobile devices.
