An inspired defensive effort against the NAIA’s top scoring defense came up short as #15 Northwestern lost to #4 Morningside 27-7 in front of a packed house on Korver Field at DeValois Stadium.
The Red Raiders fall to 2-2 in conference play, 3-2 overall, while Morningside stays unbeaten in the GPAC at 3-0 and improve to 4-1 overall.
Averaging over 60 points and 600 yards of offense coming into Saturday’s contest, Morningside’s high-powered offense was mostly held in check by the Raider’s defense that limited the Mustangs to just 122 yards of offense in the first half, 335 for the game, well under their season average. Northwestern also forced a pair of turnovers and registered one sack.
The Red Raiders held a slight edge in total yards (337-335) and totaled 13 first downs compared to14 for Morningside. Northwestern was its own worst enemy on offense, committing three turnovers and failing to score in three trips inside the Morningside 10-yard line.
