Stampede Stomp Des Moines
Herd Beat Bucs 5-2 In Front Of More Than 10,000
The Sioux Falls Stampede picked up their second consecutive win of the weekend on Saturday night, defeating the Des Moines Buccaneers, 5-2 in front of 10,133 fans inside the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. The win gave the Herd back-to-back wins for the first time since December 18th.
The Stampede knew they needed to get out to a fast start against the offensive minded Buccaneers. The Herd struck first, taking the early 1-0 lead after Csanad Erdely netted his 3rd goal of the season at 14:31 in the period. The Herd’s lead was short lived though, with the Buccaneers tying the game up moments later on a power play goal from the Buc’s leading scorer Zach Jordan. The Herd out-shot the Bucs 11-7 in the opening period and carried some momentum into the first intermission of the night.
The Herd kept the intensity level up in the second period, controlling the first 4:00 of action with physical defensive play. The Stampede would use that aggressive brand of hockey to help regain the lead at the 4:21 mark when AJ Vanderbeck broke free to net his 6th goal of the season with the assist from Jack Becker and Eric McAdams. The Herd kept the defensive pressure on throughout the period and held the Bucs to a 2-1 score heading into the 2nd intermission.
Sioux Falls broke the game open at the 3:59 mark of the 3rd period when Matt Riggleman netted his 2nd goal of the weekend, giving the Stampede a 3-1 lead. The Buccaneers made it interesting mid-way through the 3rd period when Forward David Keefer poked a deflected power play goal into the back of the net making it 3-2. The Herd put the game away for good at the 13:53 mark when Stampede Forward Josh Passolt used a break away to score his first of two goals in the period.
Sioux Falls out-shot Des Moines 8-6 in the 3rd period and 28-23 overall on Saturday night. Stampede goaltender Stefanos Lekkas recorded 21 saves to earn his 13th win of the season.
The Herd continue their four-game homestand next weekend when the Tri-City Storm enter the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center for a Friday-Saturday double header. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM both nights. Tickets are available through the KELOLAND Box Office inside the PREMIER Center or any Ticketmaster outlet.
