Sump Pump Drainge Is A Priority During Rainy Weather

With rainy days ahead, the City of Sioux Falls wants to remind homeowners to make sure that sump pumps are working properly.

“Improperly discharging sump pumps into the sanitary sewer system can result in sewage backups into homes,” said Mark Cotter, Director of Public Works. “It is illegal to attach sump pumps to floor drains or otherwise connect them to the City’s sanitary sewer system.”

Sump pumps should drain into yards or streets where the water can enter storm drains.

It is illegal to drain sump pumps into the sanitary sewer system. Draining pumps into the system could cause sewer back up into homes.

If a resident is caught violating this city ordinance, they could face a fine.
