Mark’s Memories From A Beeming PGA Champ

Rich Beem's PGA title was a great memory

We go back to 2002 for this one. I took my boys up to the cities to watch the Twins and Red Sox…and earlier in the day we went out to Hazeltine to wacth the PGA. And thanks to this guy (Rich Beem) I get goose bumps every time I think about that weekend…

We followed former Westward Ho Ass’t Pro and friend Rich Beem for his entire round that Friday. He was coming off a win at the International in Colorado and he was looking forward to going to to head with Tiger Woods who was in his prime…

Rich Beem: “What he does in his game is ideal. And that’s just how it is, he’s such a strong-willed individual, it’s incredible…”

Beem played fearless golf… And his flamboyant style made an impression on the folks at Hazeltine… To say he played great golf is a mild understatement. He didn’t back down from Tiger or the field , in fact he relished the challenge. He hit great shots when he needed them and when he birdied 16 on the final day, he had taken control… And this wasn’t just any tournament…it was the PGA!!!

Beem:”I never expected this by any stretch of the imagination. My putter was unbelievable and it kept me in it for the first 3 rounds. My ball striking the last 2 rounds and then the big putt on 16 just kind of put me over the edge thank goodness…”

And when Beemer won it, his friends back home were pumped…

Cora Lee Jorgenson, former WHCC Golf Pro:”I can’t tell you how much fun it was to watch him and be rooting for him. Even if he hadn’t shot 6 under one day, and we both experienced that round, it was just spectacular…”

Rich Beem…played his best golf on the biggest stage…
