Avera To Build Pierre Cancer Treatment Center Thanks To $10 Million Donation
Avera is set to build a cancer treatment center in Pierre thanks to a $10 million donation from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.
The center, to be named the Helmsley Center, is set to open in the fall of 2018. The facility is set to have state-of-the-art cancer care along with clinic space for primary and specialty care says Jay Gravholt director of media relations at Avera Health. It will be built in between Avera St. Mary’s Hospital and Avera Medical Group buildings.
Walter Panzirer, the trustee for the Helmsley Charitable Trust has announced Tuesday that $7.5 million of the donation will go towards the construction of the Helmsley Center and medical equipment used for chemotherapy treatments.
The Avera St. Mary’s Foundation is set to launch a fundraising campaign to raise $2.5 milllion in 15 counties in South Dakota. Panzirer says a $2.5 million matching donation will come from the Helmsley Charitable Trust once Avera St. Mary’s reaches their goal, making the total Helmsley Charitable Trust contribution $10 million.
Construction on the Helmsley Center is set to begin in the summer of 2017.
