Miller Time in 1998 Makes Mark’s Memories
Ryan Miller's huge game led Northern to Elite 8
Whenever somebody asks what was your favorite game you’ve ever covered at KDLT. The answer is on the 2nd to last shelf, way in the back as I blow the dust off the tape in March of 1998. The region championship game, South Dakota State against Northern at Frost Arena, my favorite place to watch a game…
The Northern Wolves were a perennial playoff team in the NAIA days. But then they made the move to Division II and getting to the Elite 8 became more of a challenge. Especially when it meant having to win in Brookings over the Jackrabbits who have the biggest home court advantage around.
Bob Olson’s Wolves were led by Mike Miller’s older brother Ryan. Mike is known as a great outside shooter, but on this Saturday afternoon in March, he would have lost a game of horse to #50… He put on the most amazing shooting display I’ve ever seen in a college game in these parts…
But Scott Nagy’s team was really good. Casey Walker led the way with 23 points… Brian Norberg hit some big hoops for State and they led late….
But you just felt like it was Northern’s day on this Miller 3-point play when he saluted the crowd from the sitting position… He hit a late bomb for 3 more of his 45 points and the Wolves had done the unthinkable, winning 88-82 at Frost Arena…
Ryan Miller, NSU-45 points:”In big game in high school and college I just seem to be able to step it up a notch and fortunately make my shots. It seems like in those big games that the hoop is twice as big as it is.
Bob Olson-Northern Men’s BB Coach:”Ryan is just, I can’t say enough about him. What he brings to the table is that he competes so hard. During the game I’m just trying to settle him down and say just finish the ball game. That’s what makes Ryan Miller a basketball player, he just competes like no-one I’ve ever coached in my life and that has really rubbed off on our other players over the years…”
Scott Nagy-SDSU MBB Coach:”They played a great basketball game and we played well. When you shoot 53% and out-rebound them and have less turnovers that means you’ve played a good game. They just played unbelievable. Give them credit…”
Even die-hard Jackrabbit fans were impressed by the dazzling shooting display by Ryan Miller and his Northern Wolves on that memorable day back in 1998.
