Teen Death Ruled Accidental In Self-Inflicted Shooting Case

SF Police: "We believe he shot himself on purpose but not with the intent of dying."

Police released new details Tuesday after a man was found shot to death in his vehicle in Sioux Falls. Investigators are now classifying the incident as an accidental death.

Police have determined the gunshot to have been self-inflicted, but to not have been part of a suicide attempt. Dylan Widmann, 19, of Sioux Falls, was found with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder when police arrived at his car on North First Ave just before 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 9 . First responders tried to revive Widmann, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer Sam Clemens says investigators believe Widmann “shot himself on purpose, but not with the intent of dying.”

Police say extra time was needed in the investigation to determine the owner of the gun. They say the gun did belong to Widmann and that he fired it that morning.
