Wolves win at Kearney is Fredrickson's 800th at Northern

The Northern State women’s basketball team claimed their fourth-consecutive victory of the 2016-17 season tonight, defeating Nebraska, Kearney 71-45 on the road. The win marks the 800th of head coach Curt Fredrickson’s career. In his 38th season with the program, Fredrickson continues to maintain the status of second-winningest active NCAA II women’s basketball.

Continuing their four-game win-streak, the Wolves improve to 4-0 early in the year, while the Lopers drop to 1-4 overall. NSU jumped out to a strong start defensively in the contest, holding UNK to just three points in the first quarter. The two teams headed into half time with Northern State holding a comfortable 35-13 lead.

The Lopers added 32 second half points, however, it was not enough to spark a comeback as the Wolves secured the victory with 36 second half points of their own.

Northern State held Nebraska, Kearney to a field goal percentage of 29.8 and a three-point percentage of 11.1. As a unit, the Wolves shot a season-best 56.9 percent from the floor, 50.0 percent from the three-point arc and 70.0 percent from the foul line. The Wolves recorded 40 points in the paint, 13 points off turnovers and 25 points off the bench.

The Wolves outrebounded the Lopers 38-22 in the contest, with a total of 21 team assists. NSU had three players score in double-digits, as Gabby Laimer collected 16, Brianna Kusler notched 13 and Paige Waytashek finished with a season-high 10 points.

Laimer led the NSU offense shooting 6-7 from field goal range and 3-3 from the arc. Senior Bethany Crosswait aided the Wolves with six assists, while junior Miranda Ristau tallied nine rebounds.

Northern State will return home to Wachs Arena Saturday, November 26th. The Wolves will tip-off with MSU Moorhead at 4 p.m. to begin NSIC action.
