Sioux Falls Celebrates Small Business Saturday

Dozens Of Small Businesses Host Special Deals On Designated Day

It was a different feeling Saturday for businesses like Plum’s Cooking in downtown Sioux Falls.

That’s because the day was dedicated to businesses like them.

The house ware goods shop opened last August, making Saturday its first ever Small Business Saturday.

With discount dishes and various samples and smells, they celebrate their day to shine between the likes of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

For owner Penny Klinedinst, she said any pot or pan purchase means more than business.

“It’s more than what it looks like on the outside. It goes a little bit deeper and what they’re here to say is we’re glad you’re here,” said Klinedinst.

Plum’s Cooking wasn’t the only business celebrating their first Small Business Saturday.

‘Oh My Word’ on Phillips Avenue opened its doors last February.

The stationary stores looks to open its arms to anyone interested to their niche-like style.

Co-Owner Melissa Johnson said she sees Small Business Saturday as a platform to do just that.

“It’s really awesome to see people that we know come in, those smiling faces of customers and guests that we already do know and it’s so great to see people coming in from out of town or people that we’ve maybe never met before. It’s a great way to make some friendships and some new business relationships,” said Johnson.

Klinedinst said their designated day brings shoppers and small business owners together.

“It is about community, it’s about shopping small, it’s making a concentrated effort to spend dollars in our city,” said Klinedinst.

Johnson also said while her and other businesses are labeled “small,” having a day dedicated to their work looms large.

“When shopping at a small business, you really, truly are making a difference in your own community. You’re helping your neighbors, your friends, and the people you see in the grocery store,” said Johnson.

The city of Sioux Falls first started observing Small Business Saturday in 2010.
