Jury Selection Set To Begin For Sioux City Homicide Trial

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday for the trial of a Sioux City man accused of a fatal stabbing.

47-year-old Elias Wanatee has pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder. He’s accused of stabbing to death 50-year-old Vernon Mace on Feb. 17. Police say the men had been arguing before Mace was stabbed six times. Wanatee’s lawyer has said Wanatee will argue that he acted in self-defense.

This is the second time Wanatee will stand trial on a murder charge. He was convicted of first-degree murder in 1991 for the death of Kelton “Kelly” DeCora in Sioux City. Wanatee was released from prison in January 2015 after successfully appealing his conviction and getting the charge reduced to second-degree murder.
