8-Hour Tree Standoff With Robbery Suspect Ends Peacefully In Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A standoff between Sioux Falls police and a robbery suspect who holed up in a tree ended peacefully after more than eight hours.
Police say this all started on Tuesday when there was an attempted robbery at a business on the 800 block of South Minnesota Avenue. A man entered the business and demanded money from the store clerk. The clerk knew who the man was and thought it was a joke. The man brandished a firearm and demanded cash again. The clerk wasn’t sure what was going on and attempted to call the store’s manager. The man thought the clerk was calling police and fled without any money.
On Wednesday, police issued an arrest warrant for 41-year-old Christopher Romero for first-degree robbery in connection with the robbery.
Law enforcement received tips on Thursday that Romero may have been using drugs and that he may be in a house in the 800 block of South Blaine Avenue in Sioux Falls. Police say once they arrived at the house around 1 p.m. Romero climbed out of a window, onto the roof, and into a tree. Romero refused to cooperate with authorities prompting police negotiators and SWAT to respond.
Romero finally surrendered without incident around 9 p.m. later Thursday night. Romero was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant.
