C.J. Ham Hoping Minnesota Vikings Call His Number At Fullback
Augie Alum Begins 2nd Season With Minnesota
MANKATO, MN — Wearing the number 28, C.J. Ham had an outstanding career for the Augustana Vikings that earned him a shot with the Minnesota Vikings.
The number 28 is available again this year but C.J. is more focused on something else that’s open.
The starting fullback job.
“I’ve been here for a year, I’m confident in my ability, and I just need to go out and continue to learn and have fun doing it. Something I really pride myself in is being physical so I’m just excited to be able to put pads on and really get the feel of playing fullback.” Ham says.
After averaging a league worst 75 yards per game rushing last year and releasing veteran Zach Line, Ham seems like an obvious choice to provide blocking help in the Vikings’ two back sets.
“He’s a physical guy. He can catch the ball well. He knows who to block in pass protection so he’s got those traits.” Vikings Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur says.
C.J. didn’t play much fullback at Augie or in high school, and knows the emphasis here is on leading the way for the likes of Dalvin Cook and LaTavius Murray.
“There’s actually not much difference in the scheme. We’re doing a lot of the same plays as we did last year even with the new coordinator. But like you said playing fullback is a little bit of a different position for me and I’ve got to learn the ins and outs of it.” C.J. Says.
But that hasn’t changed Ham’s outlook. He’s treating his second training camp the same we he did his first, but with more confidence after a year of experience.
“I’m just trying to make myself more valuable Come out here and work hard and just earn my spot. Nothing’s guaranteed. I just need to come out here and earn everything I get whether it’s at halfback, fullback or special teams.” Ham says.
And that versatility could make him even more dangerous in the Vikings backfield…..
“In the rare situation where you might hand him the ball he’s got some running skills.” Shurmur says.
….Should he get his number called.
