Event Teaches Girls About Engineering and Taking Things Apart
SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- A unique event geared towards girls in 5th through 10th grade gave them a chance to combine a bit of engineering and art today.
At ‘Girls Breaker Day’ girls got to learn about computers and electronics by taking them apart. After dissimilating the equipment, they were then given the chance to build an art sculpture from the pieces. Organizers of the event say this gives girls a chance to get out of their comfort zone and learn that they can do whatever they set their minds too.
“Great to see girls just be less intimated by technology as a whole. To see well maybe, they can fix something, somethings broken, maybe they can take it apart and do a little bit of exploration and replace a part,” says Organizer of event William Bushee.
For others, they say this event fuels their love for science and math and are excited to continue learning.
“So it’s really fun to me; that we can take things apart and learn about it, then put it together and make something new out of it,” says Girl Breaker Day participant Serie Hall.
The event was free, participants were also able to bring their own electronics and take them apart.
