Veterans Return Home From Midwest Honor Flight
SIOUX FALLS – Eighty-five veterans from South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota boarded a plane Tuesday for a trip that brought them full circle.
The group left Sioux Falls Regional Airport at 6 a.m. for the “Midwest Honor Flight.” The flight took the former service members to Washington, D.C. to visit war memorials built in their honor.
The group visited Arlington National Cemetery, the Iwo Jima Marine memorial and the Air Force memorials.
They returned home around 8:30 p.m. to an overwhelming crowd of supporters.
“I did not expect this at all. It was just an awesome experience,” said Vietnam veteran Jim Keizer. “It started already this morning when we left the tarmac. The one thing that impressed me so much was one of the workers out on the tarmac was saluting us as we went by.”
The flight was free for veterans, and funded through donations and fundraisers.
