Sioux Falls Police Adding Extra Officers To School Zones

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – As Sioux Falls students head back to school, you can expect to see extra police officers in area school zones.

Police say they will have an enhanced presence at the city’s school zones starting Tuesday, September 5th through the end of the month.

They reminded parents today to follow safety, drop-off and pick-up protocols set by schools, and that not all schools have crossing guards present.

They will be keeping a lookout for speeding, pedestrian safety and seat belt use.

They say the extra presence is important while drivers get back into the school year’ routine.

“All summer we’ve been driving through school zones at normal traffic rates and paces, not used to having children going in and around school. So it’s important during the month of September that we get that extra attention brought to those areas,” said Lt. Jeff Gardner.

While additional officers will only be placed in school zones this month police will continue to patrol those areas and work with school resource officers throughout the year.
