Augie Soccer Gets Record Sixth Shutout In Win Over Winona

Vikings Win 1-0

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana soccer team (5-1-2, 4-0-1 NSIC) defeated Winona State (3-4-1, 2-2-1 NSIC), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Morstad Field to secure their fifth straight win and their sixth consecutive shutout.

The first half was a seesaw battle between the Warriors and the Vikings as both teams had opportunities, but neither team could capitalize.

The Vikings came out of halftime and were continuously on the offensive, but the Warriors held their own until five minutes left in the contest when Augustana broke through. Samantha Tymkowicz fired a cross into the box and found Rebekah Thoresen who netted the ball on a header to give the Vikings the 1-0 lead in the 86th minute.

Augustana outshot Winona State 20-12 and had 10 shots on goal compared to just three by the Warriors. Augustana dominated the corner kick advantage with 14 corners to Winona State’s zero.

Taylor Machacek, who posted her sixth shutout of the year and her 23rd career, recorded three saves on the afternoon.

Ellie Knowles was all over the field on the day firing seven shots with five of those on goal. Her seven shots matched a career-high.

Augustana broke the school record for most consecutive shutouts in a season, topping the record of five that was set in 2014 and 2008. The Vikings have also matched the number of shutouts they recorded last season.

The Vikings have won the last five meeting against Winona State after dropping their first 11 matchups. All five wins have been by scores of 1-0.

Augustana hits the road next weekend to take on Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D. at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 and MSU Moorhead in Moorhead, Minn. at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1.
