Augie Sweeps Black Hills State in Volleyball

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Twelve kills from junior Courtney Place lifted the 17th-ranked Augustana volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-20) victory over Black Hills State Tuesday night inside the Elmen Center. The 3-0 victory was the Vikings fifth sweep of the year.

“I’m proud of our girls tonight,” head coach Jennifer Jacobs said, whose team improved to (10-5) on the season. “It’s always great to win in front of our home crowd.”

Senior Lauren Waite paced the Vikings with nine kills on the night while senior Ashley Wilson made the most of her opportunities, knocking down five kills on seven attack attempts while hitting .571 on the evening.

Libero Tahlyr Banks excelled defensively for Augustana, recording a match-high 15 digs.

“I’m really proud of how we played defensively,” Jacobs said. “We’ve realized we’ve been leaving a lot of balls on the floor over the past couple of weeks, so we’ve been getting after it in practice and that work showed up tonight, for sure.”

After getting off to a slow start in set one, Augustana tied up the set at five, and then at eight before going on a 4-0 run and never looking back. Kills by Wilson and Waite sparked the run and a kill from senior Bailey Koch gave the Vikings their largest lead in the set. The Litchfield, Minn. native had seven kills on the night.

With the dominating performance in set two, the Vikings looked the close things out in straight sets and they did just that. Augustana lead throughout, getting four kills from Koch in the set to complete the 3-0 sweep over the Yellow Jackets (6-7).

The Vikings return to conference action Friday with a match against Bemidji State at the Elmen Center. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
