Codington County Deputy Injured During Arrest

WATERTOWN, S.D. – A Codington County Deputy Sheriff was dragged by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop Saturday night.

The Codington County Sherriff’s Office says just before 9 p.m., a deputy stopped Jacob Engelhart, 19, for a minor traffic violation near the 1400 block of Highway 20. During the traffic stop, the deputy began a narcotics investigation. Engelhart attempted to flee, struggling with the deputy.

The deputy was then dragged by the vehicle while he attempted to apprehend Engelhart. Engelhart lost control of the vehicle, striking a street sign. The suspect then fled on foot.

The deputy was transported to Prairie Lakes Hospital, treated and was released.

Engelhart hid outside a nearby residence. The Sheriff’s Office says a citizen told law enforcement where Engelhart was hiding. He was arrested without further incident and is facing Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement, Aggravated Eluding in a Motor Vehicle, and Intent to Distribute Marijuana.

Police say a significant amount of Marijuana, THC Hash and paraphernalia was recovered from the vehicle.
