Mitchell Area Safehouse Offers Resources After Homicide

MITCHELL,S.D.- Like many communities, Mitchell is seeing a growing problem with domestic violence in the community.

The Mitchell Area Safehouse says in 2016, they helped house nearly 200 women and children in need of a home and 61 clients filed a temporary protection order. Staff at the shelter say they hope when people see things happening they speak up and be a voice for others.

“With this happening, we just want to be able to get the education out there to everyone,” says Mitchell Area Safehouse Coordinator, Coleen Smith. “That (domestic violence) it is in our community and our services are here for anyone who has been touched by violence,”

According to the shelter nearly 1 in 5 women in the U.S. have been assaulted in their lifetime. For more information about resources visit:
