Jackrabbit Women Knock Off Defending Missouri Valley Champion Drake

SDSU Wins On The Road 85-78

DES MOINES, Iowa—South Dakota State used a 6-2 run in the final 39 seconds to defeat Drake, 85-78, Sunday afternoon in a nonconference game in front of 2,309 fans at the Knapp Center.

The Jackrabbits, now 9-3, had five players score in double figures. Junior Macy Miller recorded a game-high 20 points for her fifth 20-plus point game of the season. Freshman Myah Selland recorded 16 points and team highs of seven rebounds and nine assists. Senior Ellie Thompson, junior Madison Guebert and sophomore Tagyn Larson each had 11 points.

Drake, 5-6, got 17 points from Brenni Rose while Sara Rhine scored 15 points off the bench.

The Jackrabbits took a seven-point lead, 20-13, with a 13-0 run midway through the first quarter. Miller and senior Alexis Alexander sank a trio of 3-pointers in the run. Selland then scored the final four points of the quarter for a 26-20 lead.

Drake opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run and then tied the game at 32-32 with 6:33 left when Nicole Miller scored five-straight points. SDSU answered with nine consecutive points to push its lead to 38-32 with 5:34 remaining.

The Bulldogs tied the game for a third time at 41-41, but Guebert took a pass from Larson on the wing and sank a 3-pointer for her 1,000th career point with 1:27 left in the second quarter. A Larson jumper with 24 seconds left gave SDSU the 46-44 halftime lead.

Drake opened the third quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers to take a 50-46 lead with 8:06 to play. SDSU scored the next nine points for the 55-50 lead. The Jackrabbits led by one, 58-57, at the end of the quarter.

State had a 75-69 lead with 3:11 to play after Guebert hit a 3-pointer. Following a Drake layup, Guebert sank two free throws to tie the school record for consecutive free throws at 35.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to 79-76 on a pair of free throws by Rose, but Sammie Bachrodt missed two free throws with 58 seconds left. Thompson converted a traditional 3-point play to put State up 82-76 with 39 second remaining. The Jackrabbits then sank three of six free throws for the win.

Turning Point
SDSU led 67-66 but a basket by Rhine was overturned with 6:42 left. Miller then sank a pair of free throws after a Bulldog technical foul to put the Jackrabbits up 69-66 with 6:04 left. Alexander sank a 3-pointer to give State a 72-66 lead with 5:37 to play.


  • South Dakota State scored a season-high 44 points in the first half.
  • Guebert tied the school record for consecutive free throws made at 35, but went one for two with 28 seconds left in the game. She now shares the record with Heather Sieler (2003-06) who sank 35 between the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons.
  • Guebert became the 37th Jackrabbit to score 1,000 career points. She now has 1,006 career points.
  • Miller’s 20 points this afternoon pushed her past Pat Dobratz (1970-73) for 20th on the all-time scoring list. She now has 1,321 career points.
  • Thompson scored 11 points today. She now has 1,070 career points.
