Wieneke Living the Dream in Vikings Camp

Wieneke Living the Dream in Vikings Camp

EAGAN, MN…From Austin Sumner to Taryn Christion, Jake Wieneke caught passes from some of the best quarterbacks in South Dakota State history. Now he’s catching them from one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL, Kirk Cousins.

Jake Wieneke, Vikes Rookie WR (SDSU):”Kirk Cousins is amazing. I mean Taryn was awesome in college, he was a great man and a great leader and football player. But now Kirk Cousins, there’s a reason he’s one of the best in the league…”

It’s all part of what continues to be a surreal journey that has the Maple Grove native fighting for a spot on the his hometown Minnesota Vikings roster at training camp as an undrafted rookie free agent.

Wieneke:”It’s pretty special to come out here and have the field set up with the bleachers. I have a lot of fans who were even here for the walk through. So it’s pretty cool to come out here in my home state with the Vimkings and coming out here to compete in training camp…”

It’s the same route Adam Thielen and Augustana alum CJ Ham have taken. Though he’s leaned on both for advice, Jake knows it may take time to crack the Vikings’ 53 man roster.

Jake says:”Definitely, I know the process they went through and it’s pretty special to see how they’re doing now and I’m just looking forward to any chance I might get. Whether it’s making the practice squad or making the 53, just doing whatever I can to make the team. I’m just looking to come out here and compete. Every day every snap give it everything I have and just show that I’m someone who loves football and going to work as hard as I can to help this team win…”

And he’s already made an impression with the quarterbacks who throw to him.

Trevor Siemian, Vikes QB:”He’s a really good player, he catches the ball really well and he’s got a great catch radius so it’s a lot of fun throwing to those guys and I’m just looking forward to picking up where we left off in the spring…”

Wieneke has always been spiritual and just as he was at SDSU, says he’s at peace coming into this camp with whatever happens. It’s a good attitude to have in a league that can be turbulent.
