Better Together: People Form Friendships with Seniors

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.-One program at Lutheran Social Services is matching people together to create lifelong friendships.

People find their match with the “Better Together” program.

Better Together pairs volunteers with senior citizens who are 65-years or older.

The program started in 2015 to offer socialization opportunities for seniors. Pairs spend at least four hours a month together.

However, many like Rhonda and Donna, who met through the program a little over a year ago say they always surpass that.

Pairs can choose to do whatever activities they want to.

For Rhonda and Donna their favorite thing to do together is shop.

Organizers say the goal is for people to form friendships in the end.

“We don’t want it to seem like somebody just coming in to work for them or do things for the senior we really want it to be things they can do together to form a relationship,” said Amy Feterl, Better Together Coordinator.

Lutheran Social Services is always looking for more seniors and volunteers in Minnehaha, Lincoln and Brookings Counties.

Right now there are 35 pairs in Sioux Falls and 3 in Brookings. Volunteers must be 18 or older to participate.
