Simmons Takes Over at QB for USD

VERMILLION, SD… The USD football program is coming off one of it’s best season’s to date. One year removed from an FCS playoff victory, now they’re attacking this season with a new leader at quarterback.

Austin Simmons, USD Quarterback:”Yeah it’s pretty exciting. It’s been a while in the making, so definitely looking to take advantage of it, and seize the opportunity…”

The 6-1 210-pound Junior has appeared in 15 games with the Yotes, but Head Coach Bob Nielson isn’t putting any pressure on his new starter.

Bob Nielson, USD Head Football Coach:”When you watch him he’s pretty uniquely talented in the way that he can throw the football. There’s no pressure on him to be the second coming of Chris Streveler. Austin is going to do the things that he does very well…”

Simmons says:”I’m going to try and incorporate some of what Chris does in my game, but at the same time I need to be able to do my own thing, be my own type of player…”

Time is something Simmons should be able to find in the pocket, as the Coyotes return everyone except All-American guard Stetson Dagel from last year’s offensive line.

Nielson says:”That group can help us be a better balanced football team this year and run the ball better in conjunction with throwing it…”

The Coyotes are already showing what they could be capable of with the new signal caller — landing a spot on SportsCenter’s top plays with this Spring game pitch and catch.

Simmons says:”Yeah it’s pretty cool, no matter what. Just cool to be on there. I thought Karai made a great grab on that one obviously…”

And possible a preview — of better things to come.
