Double Fatal 2-Car Wreck at Uncontrolled Intersection
NEAR VIBORG, SD – Two teens are dead and another is hospitalized with critical injuries after a two-vehicle crash on country roads late Friday night.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, it happened around 11:30 p.m. where two gravel roads meet at the intersection of 290th Street and 455th Avenue, one mile west of Viborg in a rural area.
A pickup was driving north on 455th and a car was driving west on 290th when neither vehicle stopped at the uncontrolled intersection where there are no stop signs or yield signs. The two vehicles collided and both went into the ditch.
The 19-year-old man driving the car died at the scene. He was wearing his seat belt. A 17-year-old boy who was riding in the pickup died as well. The driver of the pickup, also a 17-year-old boy, was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Charges are pending against him. Neither he nor his passenger were wearing seat belts. The names of the three teens involved have not been released. The crash is under investigation. No further details have been released.
