Someone You Should Know: The Man Behind the Mural
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – From the walls to the ceilings of downtown hot spots, one Sioux Falls artist is painting his way around town.
His work is bright and bold, adding a pop of color that’s sure to catch your attention.
Art has always been a part of Shaine Schroeder’s life. As a little boy he picked up drawing. He’s more recently taken his work to a larger space.
“You could sit down for an hour and a half and draw on an 8 by 10 piece of paper and it can look fine but it’s a totally different story when you’re putting it onto a 30 foot wall,” said Schroeder.
HIs murals, can be hard to miss.
“Even when I was painting it people would stop in the middle of the street and kind of disrupt traffic, which was interesting,” said Schroeder, “I was like okay, I must be doing something right.”
His work graces the back patio of M.B. Haskett. It also hangs on the walls of another restaurant, Bro’s Brasserie Americano. With each new piece comes a new challenge.
“I had to paint on the ceiling, Like behind the bar is this kind of curved quarter circle that basically transitions on to the ceiling and I never painted on anything like that,” said Schroeder.
One of his most well known pieces is also one of his favorites, painted outside the store Common Sense.
“I had a blast doing it, said Schroeder, “I think the colors speak to everything I’ve ever wanted to express.”
Bright colors are a staple of his work.
“I love Sioux falls, its just, hard for anyone in this city to have six months of gray skies so that’s kind of the message that I’m trying to get across is like, hey it’s not that bad, take a look a this,” said Schroeder.
His work is covering more than just the walls of Sioux Falls, it’s spreading online too.
“Some stranger that you’ve never seen in your entire life tags you on Instagram or something like that and put oh, we ran into this amazing mural and it’s just like, that’s just a really good feeling,” said Schroeder.
It’s giving more people a look into the heart of downtown.
“its just creating this effect where people are like, ooh, where’s that at I want to go visit that,” said Brienne Maner with DTSF Inc.
This city that celebrates and embraces its artists, is one Shaine is happy to call home.
“It’s one of those cities that’s big but not too big, and it feels like, I’ve said this before, it feels like we’re on the cusp of something big because theres so much of a culture explosion,” said Schroeder.
Being able to paint his passion on the walls here, is something this artist considers a gift.
“When these projects come to a close, I have a very hard time wrapping it up. I just kind of do anything I can to draw it out a little but more which I down know what that says about me, its kind of a weird, it’s like I’ve been given a gift and I don’t quite want to let it go yet,” said Schroeder.
Shaine is working on a new mural. It’s also in downtown Sioux Falls, he won’t say exactly where yet, but pictures of it should be popping up soon.
